In KINDERGARTEN????

As many of you know, I was planning to homeschool my children. Then life happened and it didn't seem like much of an option for our family. Since we can't afford a private school and didn't get around to signing up for "financial aide" in time, we decided to send Jude to public school. I mean it is only kindergarten....... Ha ha ha ha ha. Famous last words. I will start by saying school has been good for Jude. He has done very well. He isn't as shy and he really enjoys learning. He was always so reluctant to learn from me.... Well, he was learning but he wouldn't admit to knowing anything. LOL. Jude does like school. I have had my complaints about the public school system, but honestly I have very high expectations. I joined the PTA so I could have some say! HA. That was a laugh. I decided the PTA was not for me after I caused a little bit of a stink in a meeting which consequently caused the other PTA Mom's to look in the other direction when they see me! The meetings pretty much consisted about grown women complaining and arguing over things like: the high schoolers swearing in the parking lot (they were afraid to ask them not to swear in front of the children. My question is: When did High Schoolers get so scary???) and the teachers not having a standardized school supply list OR the prizes for some stupid fundraiser. I should just stop talking about them....my blood pressure is going up! I do volunteer in the library once a week. I went on the field trip, help with parties and even went in to do a craft with Jude's class. It was fun. I know all the kids names in Jude's class - and they all know me. So, two weeks ago Jude's teacher had a "minor surgery". She said she would be out for a week. It ended up being two. The kids were not on their best behavior. I wasn't thrilled with the sub. I met her and thought she yelled too much. So, this is a conversation I had last week with Jude:

Jude: [Boy in class] got a red card today.
Me: Why? He is usually good.
Jude: He said a bad word.
Me: Oh. What word did he say?
Jude: I don't know.
Me: How did you know it was a bad word?
Jude: The other kids told me.
Me: Grrrrrr.....

I was proud that Jude didn't know the bad word.

So, Saturday we go the zoo and as we were getting out of the van this was the conversation we had:

Jude: Mommy, do you know about the F-word? (he actually said f-word not f***)
Me: Uh, which F-word?
Jude: I don't know? The F-word that is bad.
Me: Where did you hear about the F-word?
Jude: Aaron told me.
Me: Why was Aaron talking about the F-word?
Jude: I don't know but [a different boy] called the teacher a bad word.
Me: Oh. Did she hear him?
Jude: No, Ian whispered it in her ear.
Me: What did she do?
Jude: She made him go talk to Mrs. Burris (the other kindergarten teacher), that is what she does every time someone says a bad word.
Me: Oh, what does Mrs. Augustus do?
Jude: I don't know! People don't say bad words when she is there!

Apparently, they only cuss at the sub.

Just be glad your child isn't in the Cleveland Public School system.

Instead of learning "bad words" he would be learning how to survive and not get shot...

So, the way I see it, it could be alot worse.

But the point is...I don't live in Cleveland and I'd prefer my kid not learn swear words at school. And I haven't heard about any kindergarteners getting shot in Cleveland lately either....

In all seriousness - I know it could be worse BUT it could be a lot better! Why not strive for excellence?!

I'm totally with ya sister! As you know Talon is also in K. I've been going back in forth with the homeschooling thing since I gave birth!...to Ré... (she and I, too, tend to butt heads a wee bit with me convincing her that I'm pretty smart) I went through this type of stuff with Ré and moved her to a county school (which I love). So, for Talon, I figured I'd let him attend our assigned city school for K b/c the county school's K is half day... and then, hopefully, get accepted into the county school for first grade. Every day I fight the urge to murder... You talk about the kids cussing... I stand outside the doors patiently waiting to see my fat cheeked brown baby and here goes parents..."Hey! What the F*&k's up?!" or "Hey, you stupid M.F.er" They're freakin' morons! If the parents act like this, you can only imagine how the kids act! Yes, the blood gets boiling b/c my standards for behavior are so much higher than that. If you choose not to have any class in your own life, that's up to you. But, I truly wish I could wash their mouths out myself. Then, of course, b/c the parental support is virtually null, the teachers/staff/principal offer no solutions, b/c any time they talk to the parents they act a fool! UGH!!! I'm so at the point that I'd like to take him out and self-teach him! His attitude is much more pleasant when he's home. Plus, I just love the little guy!...

And just b/c you don't live in Cleveland... does that mean you're not allowed to have a valid concern for your offspring? Anonymous probably doesn't even have any kids. If you lived in Cleveland, it still could be a lot worse (I bet those that lived in Columbine never expected what they got)! If you look at it "it could be worse" the story would never end. And it's people like that, that's expectations are so low, that cause us hard loving moms and dads to have to fight harder, for you and us! The silver lining is at least our kids can have a free education. The downside is our kids are getting a FREE education!

Now that I got that off my chest... I know I get a little carried away when it comes to those that came out of my womb...

unfortunatley its not limited to a school thing, I'm always amazed at the lack of parental supervision in our little town and the things that neighbor kids have to say in MY yard ... where are peoples standards these days?! UGH!

To Heather Hurt, yes I have two children....and yes they go to public school.....and no they haven't learned any "bad words"...and yes they have bith mom and dad at home and yes we instill morals.....

So, before you open your mouth and "assume" someone doesn't have children you might want to rethink before you comment.....

And, no, I do not live in Cleveland nor do I live anywhere in northern Ohio.....but then again it does not matter where I live...the only thing that matters is that I teach MY children right from wrong and I also teach them not to talk about people in a negative way....and not to judge others.....this is a leason I think you need to learn....and yes you judged me by the comment I left.

And I didn't mean shootings just happen in Cleveland Schools, school shootings can happen anywhere in the world....

And if you trying to teach your kids not to say certain words you shouldn't be writing them (even if you aren't writing the word.)

And children don't just learn these words at school....they can pick them up at friends homes, or even family members homes....you simply cannot protect those innocent ears...one day this children will grow up to be adults...and then what will you do if they use these bad words?

I rest my case...

I could go back and forth on this all day long. Your sensitivity on this is interesting... My complete, utter and entire goal in life once I concieved a child was to protect them kicking and screaming with every fiber of my being!

Whether you live in BFE or the ghetto or the vast, beautiful plains, I will always do whatever I can to protect them. We don't subject our children to negative influences intentionally, be it TV, radio, friends, family... I feel the point is being missed! I'm certain your children are the most beautiful joys of your life. You're suggesting that someone dismisses their feelings b/c they aren't amidst gunfire. Instead of sympathizing with a frustration of a loving parent, your suggestion is to be thankful. I can understand the "looking on the brighter side of things"... However, I gave birth to these innocent beings. As long as I'm alive, I'll strive to educate them on how to treat others, not to judge others nor dismiss valid feelings.

P.S. I'm an adult. I'll say- TYPE what I'd like. :-) We don't even say "shut up" to our kids. Sheesh.

Not that I want to get in the middle of this little argument I created...but to Anonymous - when you don't sign your name & we don't know you then we can only "judge" you by your comments.

Regardless - I just don't think kindergartners should be swearing at the sub. And of course my children will hear swear words but the thing is - Jude is still a my baby and I want to protect his innocence as long as I can. Perhaps you are just a random reader and not someone who knows me but you don't have to tell me about kids that learning to "survive" - I see that every day at my work. But in my humble opinion that has nothing to do with my post. They are two entirely different topics.

And to think....I was going to post about Barack again but thought it might be too controversial! LOL.

I enjoy your controversial topics ... bring it on :)

My, my... What riples I've stired in this little pond. I'm certain this isn't what Delilah intended for her post for. (So, sorry Delilah. No pun intended, but this is the most excitement I've had all week! Did I mention b4, where my opinions get me- and that I like to talk a lot.) I only check the comments to see what Delilah posts, if she'll respond to her long lost kinfolk!

P.S. Sorry Anonymous felt "judged". But, in re-reading the comments... whose judging whom? I really hate that someone may feel I'm judging them. But, you do have to use some form of judgement, right?

Heather Hurt said...

Okay! I lied. I was gonna stop commenting. But, please Delilah. I like controversy. If you get this reaction with Kindergarteners... What could possibly happen when you write a blog about the gas station, or getting a new hair cut... LOL :-)

What struck me is what you said about high school kids. The same thing happens here. When I sub at the high school, they can't believe that I'm not intimidated by the kids. Umm they're kids. Granted many of them are kids who dress like punks or act like idiots, but that's what being a teenager is about. Get it out of their systems. If you treat them like people, you'd be amazed at the fact that they treat you like one back.
Sadly, the PTA is always about politics and who you know.
