Last night, I was working furiously to get dinner ready for my starving family, when Jake comes in and sits down on the counter. He tells me he has been talking to his friends who are missionary type people in the Dominican Republic. Last year they had sent him an email saying their organization was hiring (houseparents maybe?). He had asked me about it then and I said, "There is no way you can quit your current job." Well, we don't have to worry about that now do we? Yesterday they mentioned, again, something about employment with them. We don't know anything about the organization yet but it looks like they do get to come home twice a year for about 3-4 weeks at a time (nice vacation, eh?). So, you would get to see us still.
I am not going to share my opinion at this time but I want to know your HONEST opinion. Please don't hold back. And don't be shy.

I think that would be very hurtful to the grandparents.
I think you have to do what is best for YOU guys. You need to pray about it and go where God leads you.
We see my in-laws maybe 1 a year. It sucks...but we email and talk on the phone all the time. We did what was best for us.
God will show you the way.

The website of the organization is www.nhym.org. We don't know all the information about the program, vacation time, etc. I think part of the vacation time is spent raising funds. But once again we do not have all the information. I think at this point anything can/could be an option. We just want to make sure we make the correct decision and seek God's direction during this period of time.
I have mixed feelings about this. One is: It would be hard on you and your family,not to see each other as often.
The Other is: Think of the work you could do in a place like that. What a rewarding experience for you and your kids. You wouldn't have to stay forever.

These are just some first thought. Remember it takes me awhile to think things through, but here goes:
1. Remember that job we all had a while back...um it's coming to me here , oh yeah SHELTER CARE?!?! Sounds like the same thing but only in a new state/country/island, etc.
2. How many kids so you have again? Oh that's right THREE. Remember how it was when you had ONE? Then you added another kid and couldn't wait to get out of there...
3.It would sound good if you didn't have any kids, and if you haven't done it before. the job may be different then shelter car but it sure sounds pretty similar to me.
I don't think I was that harsh was I? Just letting you know my opinion. Let me know what you do.
Don't think you could pay me enough to do houseparenting again with my own children. Maybe if the kids were grown. . . maybe not.
